The Community Bankers Association of Illinois (CBAI) Foundation recently announced its annual essay scholarship contest and First Farmers State Bank is pleased to promote this opportunity. The contest increases awareness of locally owned community banks and the contributions to their communities. Any high school senior who intends to pursue higher education is encouraged to apply.
The packet PDF includes contest rules and essay criteria and our sponsor contact info. Be sure to read through the rules carefully as CBAI will disqualify submissions that do not comply with their rules.
We strongly recommend that students proofread their essays… and proofread again! It would be advisable for another individual (perhaps an English teacher) to review the essay as well. Do not rely on spell-check or grammar-check because there are numerous errors and inconsistencies these features will not catch.
Entries must be returned to any of First Farmers’ three banking locations no later than 5:00p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018. There will be no exceptions. Entries can be dropped off at or mailed to any First Farmers location, but if you opt to mail it, be sure to allow enough time for delivery.
Please note: the packet information states a CBAI deadline of 5:00p.m. February 7, 2018. Disregard this date for submission purposes; that is the deadline for banks to turn in their selected essays from all of those submitted. First Farmers is allowed to submit a total of three (3) essays, and we will need time to review, select and submit the essays ahead of CBAI's deadline.
The grand prize of $4,000 ($1,000 a year for up to four years of higher education) will be given to the student whose essay is judged the best from among the 13 CBAI regions in Illinois. The high school of the overall winner will receive $500 as well. If the grand prize winner is from our region, there will also be a one-time $500 second-place winner selected. If the grand prize winner is not from our region, then there will be a one-time $1,000 first-place award and a second-place winner.
Essays will be evaluated for overall quality and understanding of the contest rules, and the top three (3) entries will be chosen from all we receive and sent to CBAI for further consideration. CBAI will select their winners by early May 2018 and announce to their community bank sponsors shortly thereafter. If your essay is selected as a semi-finalist, CBAI will notify you (and us) later in 2017.
